THE PROFESSOR’S RZ50 REVIEW
The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is an AV Receiver that visually conveys a bold stance with its brushed aluminum face and tactical-like information display window.
Let’s take a look at it from an alternate angle…from the inside…out...
The stalwart stance of the RZ50 shields over 6000 parts…from circuit boards to audio converters, to professional level video processors…the cliché “More than meets the eye” is an understatement here. What are all these parts doing?
Have you heard of Apple TV? Fire TV? Roku? PlayStation? XBOX? How about a good old fashioned cable TV box or DVD/Blu-ray disc player? I’ll bet your TV has apps too…
Why are there so many options to watch, listen and interact with media? Well, it’s because there’s more media available today than ever before. We are fortunate to be able to explore millions of streams of audio, video, games, without ever having to leave our sofa, but…when does this become unmanageable?
Enter the AVR. An Audio/Video Receiver (AVR), receives audio and video signals from such devices, and seamlessly switches between them, decoding (translating) this content, then sending the video signal to the TV and the audio signal to the speakers.
How does the RZ50 excel at these processes? It would take our 60+ person Engineering team in Osaka, Japan to try to explain how this works technically, but let’s break it down into things you should know while shopping for an AVR:
Audio — How it deals with sound
Imagine being able to interpret 100s of languages. The RZ50 is capable of decoding audio signals starting with a vintage analog turntable all the way to today’s immersive multi-channel lossless formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It can capture these audio signals via multiple connections including HDMI, and even from your TV via eARC. As a bonus, the RZ50 includes built-in streaming apps like Pandora and is Works with Sonos certified. It then steers these signals toward up to 9 speaker locations around your listening space, enveloping you in the world you selected to experience, such as a raptor chase in Jurassic World, or a symphony at the Sydney Opera House. It drives most speakers effortlessly with an amplifier rating of 120 WPC.* (2ch driven).
Is your room a movie theater? Probably not…most rooms are not ideal for sound reproduction. What if your speakers don’t sound as good as you expected? Onkyo has you covered with Dirac Room Correction technology. Without getting too technical, room correction, in general, listens to how your system is performing, then uses advanced computing to positively alter the signal to better fit your space. It’s practically magic for your ears! The RZ50 comes out of the box equipped with Dirac Live software built-in, no need for upgrades, unless you’d like to fine tune your bass further with Dirac Live Bass Control (available as a paid option).
Video — How it deals with images
Isn’t it awesome when you fire up your big screen flat panel? The image draws your eyes into a world rich with new possibilities. Today’s TVs have the ability to display super high-resolution images and frame rates which are important for sports and gaming, in particular. The RZ50 can guide these advanced video signals to your TV with no loss in resolution or motion. In fact, the RZ50 was the world’ first AVR to pass full gaming specs such as 4k/120.
Bringing an entertainment machine like this to market took a 60+ person team of PAC engineers, mostly based in Osaka Japan, to unravel the needs of the person who will ultimately enjoy it. This team consists of mechanical engineers, software engineers, electrical engineers...all working toward one goal...to deliver the best possible music, movie, and gaming experience in its category.
The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is an AV Receiver that redefined what is possible in its class. It’s nestled in between the TX-RZ30 which offers slightly less power, and the beastly TX-RZ70 which is the current flagship AVR in Onkyo’s lineup.
Which one is right for you?
